The conflict in Syria took another violent turn last Friday. Two car bombs exploded outside government security buildings in Damascus, killing at least 44 people according to officials. The government and the opposition blamed each other for the attacks.
After months of peaceful protests, the uprising in Syria has turned increasingly militarized over the fall. The Free Syrian Army is getting more organized as soldiers continue to desert the regular army and join the rebellion. But the main insurgent group says its goal is to protect civilians, not trigger a civil war.
